Understanding Police Investigations

In this session, Mr. Jurkofsky will be helping paralegals understand how an officer investigates an incident, and what goes into writing a police incident report. They will explore the different aspects of an investigation (either criminal or civil) and how to read reports. They will also cover what impact a test has on an incident, including what impact there may be if a test was not conducted.

Child custody is one area of law that will likely touch every legal practitioner’s work life regardless of your actual practice area. Inevitably, as soon as someone knows you work in law, you will be asked to give some guidance about a child custody case whether it is from a friend, a neighbor, a co-worker or a client. 

Spoliation of Social Media Evidence

In the last 20 years, social media has significantly increased the availability of personal information online. How does potential social media evidence affect the litigation process? How should litigators advise their clients to manage their social media accounts when litigation is anticipated or pending? What are the potential consequences if a client deletes social media posts or an entire account?

Internet Law - Communications Decency Act

This session will cover the basic immunities provided to interactive computer service providers under the Communications Decency Act of 1996. Additionally, discussion will include recent proposals by Congress and the Department of Justice to modify the law out of concerns that the immunities originally enacted are now too broad. Key issues include the purpose of the Act, legal requirements for invoking immunity, and public policy considerations.

CP Review - Real Estate Law

This session will assist those preparing for the real estate portion of the Certified Paralegal Exam. The historical development of real estate law and its evolution to modern times will be introduced. Identifying the various types of estates and ownership rights will be examined in detail. This session will address contracts as they relate to real estate transactions, the components of a deed, as well as landlord and tenant rights. Easements and liens will be differentiated. Appraisal, title insurance, and escrow will be explained. Basic financing options will be reviewed.

CP Review - Torts

This session assists those preparing for the Certified Paralegal Exam review for the Torts portion of the Knowledge Exam. Learning objectives include the following: (1) Knowing the definition of a tort, including the difference between a tort and a criminal act; (2) Understanding how and where different types of cases are filed and tried; (3) Understanding intentional torts, negligence, and strict liability; (4) Studying the Federal Torts Claim Act; and (5) Understanding how common law and state statutory law define the boundaries of tort law.

CP Review - Legal Ethics

This session will assist those preparing for the Certified Paralegal Exam, specifically reviewing for the Ethics portion of the exam. The session will focus on the following: (1) Ethical responsibilities centering on performance of delegated work; (2) Paralegal professional responsibility; (3) Professional relationships; (4) Client and public contracts; and (5) Attorney code of ethics and discipline.

CP Review - Corporate & Commercial Law

This session will assist those taking the Certified Paralegal Exam, focusing on reviewing for the corporate/commercial law portion of the Knowledge Exam. The session offers a broad and basic view of the fundamentals of corporate and commercial law and will include discussions in the following areas: (1) Basic concepts of various types of business entities, including formation, issues of capitalization, management, ownership, public vs.
